PARTNERSHIP DANCE COMPETITION (KS 1 and KS 2)

Wednesday 5^th February was the day that both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Dance squads had been waiting for…..The Kings Heath Partnership inter-school dance competition.

After many hours of practice, the children presented their dances to a panel of judges and dance squads from other partnership schools, from whom they also learned a great deal about showmanship and technique. If the girls were at all nervous, it didn’t show. What was clear was their enthusiasm and their commitment to do the school proud and themselves proud. They achieved both!

Thank you all, including the Year 5&6 coaches for the KS1 team, for your commitment. We look forward to doing it all again next year.

St Patrick's Day

We had a special visitor in Nursery today - Chris came to show us how to do Irish dancing.  He wore special shoes that made tapping noises on the floor when he danced.   He moved very fast in time to the music.   It was very exciting to watch and then we had a go.   It was great fun.

Key Stage 2 Dance Competition

On the 28^TH November 10 year 6 girls went to a dance competition at Kings Norton Girls School. 4 schools participated in the event and, out of those schools, our team came second. Our squad danced to the song ‘fast car’.

Nursery have had a brilliant, but busy week. To begin our week we learnt all about Chinese New Year, watching clips about how it is celebrated. 

We then made pancakes on Tuesday for pancake day and we had a wonderful time tasting them with a variety of toppings. 

On Wednesday during PE we learnt about the Chinese New Year Dragon Dance, and we all had the opportunity to join in. Watch our dance in the video below (I hope it's worked!!)

During the rest of the week we thought about Valentines day, and made our special cards to give to those who we love.

It has been a great way to finish off our half term, and we hope that you all have a lovely rest next week.

What a busy week in Reception!

This week has been a very busy and exciting week in Reception!  We have shared a variety of different events:

On Wednesday morning Year 1 experienced a fantastic drama workshop run by "Stage Coach".   The children took part in a drama session based on the popular story of "Alice in Wonderland".   It was quite hard work, but everyone really enjoyed it.   The workshop enabled the children to see how movement, song and dance can be combined to create a piece of work.  

St George's Day - Year 6

St George’s Day!

The 24^th of April is the fantastic St. George’s Day where we celebrate the life of England’s patron saint. We celebrate his life because of how he stood up for what he believed in, even when the consequence was death! Many years ago George was a Roman soldier and he was a Christian, and when he was ordered to kill other people of the same faith he refused (he bravely stood up for what he believed in).

There are many other stories about Saint George, however, this one is the most factual; a more mythical tale about him would be the story of him killing a dragon! I’m not sure how true this is though…

In Year 6 we celebrated this day by being taught Morris Dancing by actual Morris Dancers. This is a traditional dance believed to be brought back from Spain by John of Jaunt (the second son of Edward III) where he was fighting. However, no one knows for certain the origins of Morris Dancing, and there are many other beliefs about where it came from!

We really enjoyed learning the dance and then the whole school enjoyed watching the dancers complete even more complicated routines!

Another way we celebrated the day was by designing St. George shields (which we decorated and added facts). Please see some examples of these below.

St George`s Day in Year 2

Year 2 had a very enjoyable day on Thursday 23^rd April, firstly acting out the story of St George and the dragon in groups, then taking part in djembe drumming workshops with Andy. The children listened very carefully, copied different rhythm patterns and combined them to create some good pieces of music.

At the end of the day, we watched the 1^st Sedgeley Morris dancers perform a hankerchief dance and some different stick dances. It was a lovely end to a very diverse day- reflecting our society in Britain today.

Year 3 had a wonderful time exploring the Kingswood site which activities included; abseiling, climbing, quad biking, orienteering, archery, assault courses, singing, dancing, team building challenges, and a campfire party with hot chocolate and marshmallows! To allow for such a fun filled day year 3 enjoyed their energy packed 3 hot meals a day (especially Mr Haycock) followed by a comfy bed in Kingswood fabulous dorm rooms!

Year 1 have been working very hard to learn their lines, songs and dances for their assembly.    It was brilliant!   Well done to everyone!

Year 2: Circus Topic Exit Point

To finish off a fantastic Circus topic, we invited our families in to see our homework projects, try out games we'd programmed in Purple Mash and check out our Circus dance skills, too!

Nearly 40 parents came, so thank you for supporting us!

Our visit from the Royal Ballet.

On Wednesday morning Year 1 took part in a ballet workshop.   Four members of the Birmingham Royal Ballet Company came to school to work with 1 Elm and 1 Fir.   The children had a wonderful time learning ballet moves and dancing to music played by the Company's pianist.
