A delegation of Japanese educationalists, teachers and headteachers had a tour of the school late Friday afternoon as part of a one week visit to the United Kingdom.  Even though the children had gone home, I was still immensely proud of the school as the bright  and stimulating environment demonstrated the hard work and creativity of the children and staff.  Our visitors were hugely impressed  with the use of technology in the school along with the way the school's vision and values underpin the day to day work of the children and staff.

The 'Value of the Month' for October is responsibility.  I would like to hear about the things you are responsible for both at home and in school.

Year 6 Football Match

On Friday the 10^th October the Chilcote boys football team played against St Bernard’s Primary School. The match was a 7 a-side game, 20 minutes each way. St Bernard’s started the match well and dominated the early stages without really threatening the Chilcote goal. After 10 minutes Chilcote woke up and had a few attacking moves of their own. They threatened with a one on one before Johnny scored the opener. Johnny then put Chilcote 2 v 0 up with a nicely taken strike from just outside the area. Leo and Bradley were making their pace count on the wings. After half time Chilcote cranked up the pressure and Johnny added his, and Chilcote’s third after rounding the goalkeeper. Ali and Max did really well in defence to limit St Bernard’s to very few attempts on goal. In the end Chilcote won 3v0 and played some great football at times. A good start to the season, well done boys!!!

Nursery's Eid Day

Today Nursery have learnt about how some children celebrated Eid with their family recently.  We came to school in our party clothes, shared photos and talked about what makes us special.  We had a special talk from a Mummy about Eid and looked at some lovely costumes and lanterns.

 

 

Nursery's Listening Walk

Nursery had great fun on Wednesday when we went on a 'Listening Walk' around the school.  We tried hard to tune into the sounds around us and identify what they were!  We heard birds tweeting, our feet stomping, the playground bell ringing and children talking.  We did very good listening!

Terrific Tesco Trip

On Monday 6^th October, Year 6 went on a terrific trip to Tesco! Everybody enjoyed It; one of our favourite parts was when we got to go into the freezer - it was extremely cold and everybody came out feeling like a block of ice! We also tried lots of delicious foods including different types of cheese (5 Counties, Applewood and Mature Cheddar). Then we went into the bakery and iced some wonderful cookies, which we got to take home at the end of the day; also in the bakery we learnt how they make their appetising bread, and it was very interesting.

After we had been in the bakery we went to look at different fruit and vegetables. We learnt where the fruit and vegetables came from and what they grew in or on (did you know that grapes and tomatoes both grow on vines!!). After that, we walked over to the fish section and looked at all the slippery and slimy fish! We were offered some gloves and then touched the trout fish (some of us put our fingers in its mouth; it was gross!). Last but not least, we went upstairs into the staff room and tried lots of delightful fruit and bread (including tiger, soda and brioche bread).

We really had a great time and enjoyed it so much!

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING    Friday 3rd October

Last Friday was our first School Council meeting (it was exciting to see our new representatives of our school).

Our subject this week was to introduce ourselves to the other councillors, elect the chair person and secretary and then talk about new equipment for huff and puff.

Year 4 mixed football tournament

On Wednesday 1^st October some year 4 children (Lily, Ailish, Nicole, Harry, Rayan, Damian and Cian) represented Chilcote in a Baverstock sports partnership mixed 5-aside competition at Baverstock Academy. The tournament was a round robin event with the children playing 3 other schools. In the first game the children played The Oaks primary school and raced into a 3v0 lead. They then let a goal in, which meant it was 3v1 at half time. In the second half The Oaks were reinvigorated and managed to get back on level terms. Chilcote retook the lead only for The Oaks to score another equaliser. Then, with only a few minutes remaining Chilcote won the game with a penalty kick scored by Damian. The match ended 5v4. In the second game (against Kings Norton) it was much the same as the first with Chilcote racing into a 3v0 lead, thanks to a hat-trick from Cian. Unfortunately, the children let the lead slip, and this time they couldn’t recover it so went on to lose the game 5v3. They had chances to get back into the game in the second half but couldn’t find a way past the Kings Norton goalkeeper. Finally, the children played Hollywood, they again took an early lead and then throughout the first half extended the lead to 4v0. Hollywood regrouped in the second half and scored 2 goals back. Chilcote then responded with 2 more goals of their own, meaning the match ended 6v2. Chilcote finished the tournament as runners up to Kings Norton primary, so a big well done to all of the children involved!!!  

Year 3 Mixed Football Tournament

On Monday 29^th September some year 3 children (Lily, Anna, Harrison, Josh, Madison and Adam) represented Chilcote in a Baverstock sports partnership mixed 5-aside football tournament.  The tournament was held at Baverstock Academy. The children played 2 matches against 2 different schools. Firstly, they played The Oaks in a tough match. The Oaks took the lead and then grabbed a second goal, which meant they lead 2v0 at half time. The Chilcote team rallied and finally started to take their chances. They managed to score three goals in the second half to win the match 3v2. Chilcote’s next opponents were Hollywood who had beaten The Oaks 3v0, so this meant whoever won this match won the tournament. It was going to be a tough match. Chilcote made a flying start to the match and scored to go 1v0 up. Hollywood then equalised just before half time. Early in the second half Hollywood took the lead, but Chilcote battled back to grab the equaliser. Hollywood took the lead two more times, but each time Chilcote managed to get an equaliser. The match ended 4v4, and was a thrilling game. There was then a period of golden goal extra-time. Both teams had a good chance to score but spurned it. The match was eventually decided by a penalty shootout, with Hollywood triumphing 1v0 after 3 penalties each. The team should be very proud of their efforts as they did really well!!!

Year 2's Trip to Tesco

This week, we took a terrific trip to Tesco in Monkspath.

When we arrived, we were given our hats (to stop hair falling into the food!) and headed to the bakery where we discovered how the bread is made. To tie-in with our Computing unit, we learned how computers controlled all the machines. We also put icing on our very own cookies.

Next, we searched the fruit aisle to spot different colours. Whilst we were there, we beat the teachers and parents 4-0 in the food quiz and their penalty was to spend two minutes in the freezer at -22c. Brrrrrrrr!

After that, we identified different species of fish and tasted different varieties of cheese before heading off to the staff room for some fruity snacks and bread tasting.

Overall, it was an infor-licious day!

Trip to the Allotment.

On Wednesday afternoon we, Year 5, walked down to the local allotment and met Colin who told us all about vegetables. We needed to find out about growing vegetables for our mission to Mars, we could hardly nip down the local supermarket if we are on Mars. We interviewed Colin about how best to grow our favourite vegetables. It was a great afternoon out and the weather was fab too.

MISSION TO MARS!

 

We have had a great start to the year! We have started out TOPIC: MISSION TO MARS!

Last week we had our ENTRY POINT DAY. We trained hard in the morning to improve our physical fitness as you have to be fit to be an astronaut! In the afternoon we learnt to input sequences into devices such as roamers and Lego space craft so we could control our moon landing craft.

 

Year 1 Entry Point Day

On Thursday Year 1 had a very exciting adventure to the forest school and the local allotments to celebrate the start of our new IPC topic "Our World".   We played an exciting game of "123 where are you?" to help us learn about keeping safe in the forest environment.   

We great fun collecting a variety of natural resources such as feathers, acorns, fir cones and different leaves which we used to create some fabulous art work in the style of the artist Andy Goldsworthy.
  

Year 2 Science: Materials Testers

As part of our Topic, ‘Hooray . . . Let’s go on holiday!’, we’ve been looking at materials that have the right combination of properties for a suitcase. First, we watched two inspiring videos; we learned about the journey of a suitcase through an airport and how scientists test materials.

We then sketched out our plans for an investigation and thought about health and safety. We decided to make it a fair test by keeping the size and shape of the materials the same. After that, it was time to carry out our water-soaking, playground-dragging, hammer-smashing tests! We concluded that plastic was the best material: it had all the right properties to survive airports.

Year 6 Boys Football Tournament

On Friday 12^th September the Chilcote year 6 boys team played their first tournament of the year at Maypole FC. They were competing against 7 other schools. In the first game they played Yardley Wood and thanks to a Johnny goal won the match 1v0. After that, they played St Martins school and had a tightly contested game with few chances. It finished 0v0. The final group game was against Wheelers Lane and Chilcote needed to win. Unfortunately, the boys fell to sleep on their own goal kick and conceded a sloppy goal. This meant they lost the match 1v0. The boys didn’t qualify for the semi-finals but there were lots of positives in their first tournament. Well done boys!!!  

Year 2: Topic Entry Point Day

For our entry point to our new topic, ‘Hooray . . . Let’s go on holiday!’, we had a fantastic and memorable day by: being travel agents and using a computer database; booking our own holiday and organizing our passports; checking our luggage in and going through security; taking off in a plane and enjoying the in-flight entertainment, then finally arriving where we relaxed in the sunshine on our towels.  Luckily, the flight arrived back just in time for our parents to pick us up!
