RASH in Chilcote Garden

Yesterday we were very excited as it was our turn in the garden. Luckily, it had stopped raining. 

We started the garden session with Dave the gardener giving us a tour of the garden. He explained what everything was and how the school was trying to grow its own fruit.   Then he showed us the compost bin and how we are making our own compost at school and how the worms are helping us too.

The most exciting part was when we went into the poly tunnel to look at the plants, seeds and other things that were being housed in there for the winter months. We then helped Dave plant seeds. We had a fun afternoon, thank you to Dave for a fantastic afternoon of learning!

Year 5 and 6 Mixed Basketball

On Wednesday 27th January 7 children from Chilcote (Leon, Sam, Sameer, Mohammed, Gabrielle, Roberta and Trinity) represented the school in a mixed basketball tournament at Kings Heath Boys' School.

The tournament was a round-robin style event against 4 other schools: Hollywood, Bells Farm, Yardley Wood and The Oaks.

Chilcote started with a match against Hollywood, which they lost 11 points to 0. The next game went better for Chilcote as they beat The Oaks 4 points to 0, with Sam scoring both baskets. Then, they played against Bells Farm and managed to get a 2 v 2 draw (Leon got the basket), which was a really good result as Bells Farm played very well! Finally, Chilcote played against Yardley Wood and despite taking the lead (through Gabrielle) and having a few chances Chilcote couldn't finish the game off and Yardley Wood got a late, deserved equalizer, so the game ended 2v2.

With all of the results in Chilcote finished in 2nd place overall! Well done to all involved for representing the school so well!!!

Year 5 and 6 mixed Sportshall Athletics Tournament

On Wednesday 20th January eighteen children, from years 5 and 6, represented Chilcote in a mixed sportshall athletics tournament held at Billsley Tennis Centre. The children were: Damian, Cian, Lola, Ailish, Nicole, Amrita, Zach, Scott, Roberta, Olivia, Jay, Hamaad, Emily, Leah, Arooj, Sam, James, Aaron.

Each child took part in two track events and two field events. The track events were; Obstacle relay, 1 lap relay, 2 lap relay, 6 lap paarlauf relay, over/under relay and the 4 x 1 lap relay. The field events were: chest push, standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, soft javelin and the speed bounce.

The children were awarded points for their finishing times and the distances that they threw/jumped. Out of a total of 7 schools Chilcote finished in 1st place with a total of 268points. Well done to all of the children involved who represented the school superbly!

Year 3 and 4 Mixed Sportshall Athletics

The children were: Gino, Husayn, Denis, Maddie, Lilly, Anna, Tamsin, Rachel, Madison, Josh, Steven, Milan, Ruby, Shivani, Dylan, Ewan, Tara and Safah.

Each child took part in two track events and two field events. The track events were; Obstacle relay, 1 lap relay, 2 lap relay, 1 lap hurdles relay, over/under relay and the 4 x 1 lap relay. The field events were: chest push, standing long jump, 5 strides jump, vertical jump, soft javelin and the speed bounce.

The children were awarded points for their finishing times and the distances that they threw/jumped. Out of a total of 6 schools Chilcote finished in 3rd place with a total of 170points. Well done to all of the children involved who represented the school superbly!

Year 2 Scratch Junior projects

Over the last two weeks Year 2 have been using Scratch Junior on the ipads to create information animations about a person from the past. Using their research and non-chronological report from English, their animations were about either Florence Nightingale or Christopher Columbus. The children were able to create new sprites, write code to make them move and speak and debug their code. The results were fantastic! 

Chilcote Junior Choir at `Young Voices`.

Chilcote Junior Choir performed at the `Young Voices` concert on 14^th January at the Genting arena at the NEC.

We had a fantastic time singing with 6,000 other children –the biggest children`s choir in the world- to an audience of 7,000!

It was a very long day, a morning at school, followed by a 3 hour rehearsal, then a two hour concert.

We are very proud of all the children who took part as they behaved beautifully, sang confidently and tirelessly, and remembered all their dance moves-this was especially hard with `Uptown Funk`! They were all brilliant ambassadors for Chilcote school.

 Thank you very much to all of our parents who have supported us with learning our songs, words and dance moves and especial thanks to Mrs Bundy, Mrs Barrows, Mrs Peccol and Mrs Drew who accompanied us and joined in so enthusiastically. We really appreciated your care and support.

Exploring in the snow!

Today we were very lucky to have some snow on the playground, so we went outside and we talked about how the snow felt.  We also used sticks and paint brushes to make marks and write our names in the snow.  We watched the snow melt throughout the day, it was a great link to our water topic. We had a very exciting and fun time!

Year 3's trip to the Thinktank

Our Trip to the Amazing Think Tank!

The children had a brilliant time at the the Think Tank. We arrived for 10 am on a green eco-bus. We decided to have our snacks first to increase our energy levels for an exciting day! There was 4 levels to explore: The Future, The Present, Workshop of the World, and The Past. In each zone there were exciting exhibits and interesting interactive displays such as a talking robot, a 150 million year old crocodile skeleton, a steam engine, a land speed record breaking car and a spitfire which was hanging from the roof. After lunch we visited the Planetarium where we watched an awe inspiring video of our solar system, there were lots of oohs and gasps! We really enjoyed going to the shop and then at the end of the day we had time to look at some of our favorite exhibits again.

Chilcote Junior Choir

Chilcote Junior Choir have been very busy recently, working hard to learn our songs ready for our `Young Voices` concert on 14^th January, whilst also performing in December for the whole school, for the residents of Brook Meadow Court and at a concert at St Peter`s church.

Everyone has tried very hard to learn all of the songs –many of which are in 2 parts-and we have received many lovely compliments about our singing.

Thank you very much to all of our parents who have supported us at home with learning our songs, words and dance moves and to all the adults who have helped us on our visits.

We are very pleased that we helped to raise over £300 for the Birmingham Music Service from donations received at the concert at St Peters church. Thank you everyone who donated so generously.

We are now looking forward to singing at Oak Tree Court residential home in the near future and of course at the NEC arena for the `Young Voices` concert.

Year 4 Chocolate Projects

On Tuesday 15th December the children of year 4 created a chocolate exhibition (just like the one they had seen at Cadbury World). This was the exit point day activity for their chocolate topic.

They used the projects they had worked on at home, which they did as a 3 week homework project, as the basis for the exhibition. They were fantastic, amazing, unbelievable, superb and just brilliant!!! Well done to all of the children in year 4! Also, a big thank you to all of the parents, carers and siblings who helped them produce such outstanding work!

Our Special Trip to the Post Office

Today we went to post our special wish lists to Santa. We walked to the Post Office on Baldwin's Lane, where we met Jag the postman. He took our special envelops that had our letters, sprinkled with a little magic dust. He put a special 1st class stamp on and he put the envelopes into a sack. We sang some Christmas songs and we are going to wait patiently for our presents from Santa! We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in 2016!

Foundations Stage's Wonderful Nativity!

Thank you for all of your support with the foundation stage's Nativity performance. The children and adults had a great time preparing and performing in front of the school and our special adults. The children worked very hard in learning their lines, songs and demonstrating their fantastic acting skills.

 

Panto time in Foundation

On Tuesday we had a great treat when we were able to watch a Pantomime story about Pinocchio. It was so much fun.  We enjoyed joining in with the songs and calling out when we saw the evil puppeteer. It really made us feel festive and get in the mood for Christmas.

Phonics INSPIRE workshop in Reception

We were so pleased that so many parents and grandparents joined us for our Phonics INSPIRE workshop yesterday morning! It was lovely for our visitors to see how we learn our new phonemes, graphemes and tricky words and to join in with our free- flow activities. 

Year 4 Trip to Cadbury World

On Tuesday  10^th  of  November  2015  we (4 maple) went  on  a  trip  to Cadbury World  in  Bournville. We  went  as  part of   our  chocolate  topic.

Firstly, we went to see the history of  cocoa beans. I  learnt that  you  have to have people out in tropical Rainforists so they can harvest them.

Secondly, we went to see the history of Cadbury and we had a look at two different videos, but they were both about cocoa beans. We learnt that there were two men who had sons and they took over Cadbury.

 

Next , we went out and found  a little car ride it was called  the Cadabra ride. We enjoyed the little cocoa beans all around but the best bit of it was the cave with the paintings at the end.

After, we walked around the factory and we saw boxes going down a slide. The best bit was getting to taste the chocolate with popping candy and jelly babies.

Year 6 Handball

On Wednesday the 4^th of November 7 year 6’s went to a Baverstock handball competition and did very well as they were runners up. There were 3 other schools and we played them all twice. The schools we played against were: Hollywood, The Oaks and Yardley wood. In fourth place was The Oaks as we beat them 5-0. In third place where Yardley wood they were pretty good. And in second place was us Chilcote Primary we were amazingly good. But unfortunately Hollywood came in a very good first place because they were phenomenally good. So well done to:

Reception's Visit from the Animal Man!

Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from Animals in Hands, where the children had the opportunity to handle a variety of animals. The children were able to get close to many animals such as a snake, a toad, a hedgehog, a cockroach, a tarantula and an owl. It was great fun!

Year 3 and 4 and Year 5 and 6 Gymnastics Tournament

On Tuesday 17th November six children in year 4 and six children in year 6 represented Chilcote in a mixed gymnastics competition. The tournament took place at King's Heath Boys School in their sports hall.

All of the children had to perform a gymnastics routine on the floor and then on the vault. They were scored by independent judges. The children were performing the Key Steps routine (year 4 did key steps 2 and year 6 did key steps 3).

The children did really well with their performances and represented the school excellently. The year 4 children finished in fourth place out of five schools in their competition. The year 6 children finished in first place out of four schools, which was an excellent achievement! Well done to all of the children involved for representing the school so well!!!

Year 6 Mixed Handball Tournament

On Wednesday 4th November 2015 seven children from year 6 represented the school in a mixed handball competition. The tournament took place at Kings Heath Boys' Sports Hall. There were four teams in the tournament: Chilcote, Hollywood, Yardley Wood and The Oaks.

Chilcote started off against The Oaks and won 5v0. They then played against Yardley Wood and lost 3v1. Next, they played against Holywood and narrowly lost 2v1. This left Chilcote in third position after the first round of matches.

Again, Chilcote played against The Oaks and won 5v0. They then played Yardley Wood in a dramatic game that they went 2v0 up in then went 3v2 down in before coming back to win 4v3. Finally, Chilcote lost 3v1 to Hollywood.

This meant (with all the other results too) that Chilcote finished in second place courtesy of having a better goal difference than Yardley Wood. Well done to all of the children involved for a fantastic effort!!!

Out and About Week

We had a very busy week during 'Out and About Week' last half term. In year 1 we took our Mathematics lessons outside into the playground and solved lots of number problems around the school grounds. We also used our hands and feet to measure items around the playground, which was lots of fun! Later in the week we went to Trittiford Park to evaluate the area. Back in the classroom, we discussed how the area could be improved and wrote letters to a local MP! The children know how important it is for us to look after our local area and keep it looking smart and clean and so we teamed up with different classes in the school and went on a whole school litter pick. Well done year 1 for some great learning and super team work!
