Close encounters!

On Tuesday 21st April, Year 1 were fortunate enough to have a visit from Animals in Hand. We had some close encounters with some fantastic creepy crawlies!

Year 5 and 6 Mixed Tag-Rugby

On Wednesday 22nd April 11 children from years 5 and 6 (Max, Bradley, Oliver, Tom, Sam, Leo, Ali, Seren, Connie, Leah and Emily) represented the school in a mixed tag-rugby competition held at Moseley Rugby club.

Only two other teams had entered this tournament so it meant we played them twice each. Chilcote played against Yardley Wood in their first game. They played really well and won the match 9 v 2. In their second match they played Hollywood and it was much closer. Chilcote made quite a few unforced errors with their handling and passing. The game ended 3 v 3. After a short rest Chilcote then played against Hollywood again. This time they played much better and won the game 4 v 2. Finally, they played Yardley Wood again. It was a closer affair than the first game but Chilcote still ran out 5 v 2 winners.  These results meant that Chilcote won the tournament for a second year running.

The children did really well and listened well to the tactic of ‘run’! What was most impressive though was their defensive work in tagging the opposition enough times to turn the ball over.  Well done to all involved!!!

St George's day in year 3

In year 3 this morning we had a special visit from Mr Singh from the Music Service. He came in to teach us all about  Dhol drumming. We learnt that the drum comes from The Punjab region in India.

We also learnt about the names of beaters. The big beater is called a Dugga, and the long one is called a Tilly. Mr Singh also told us some of the names for drum beats like the Geh and Nah.

We also had a go playing the drums, which was awesome, brilliant and fantastic fun. The teachers had a go too! J

In the afternoon we enjoyed watching the Morris dancing outside in the playground. We watched the dancing with the whole school. Check out the video.

Mr Merrick plays the Blues in Year 6!

Year 6 had a real treat today when Mr Merrick led our Music lesson and played his Blues guitars in a variety of different Blues styles.
We are beginning a unit of work on Blues and Jazz music and it was a fantastic introduction to our work. The children were particularly interested in his metal `resonator` guitar and `bottle neck` which he used to slide up and down the neck of the guitar to create different harmonic effects.
The children asked lots of thoughtful questions and have developed a good understanding of the history of Blues music. Thank you very much Mr Merrick! We all really enjoyed your playing.

Nursery's Trip to the Farm

Nursery had a lovely day at the farm on Friday.  We watched birds of prey fly in the field and then we had a fantastic time feeding the animals and learning about where they live and what they eat.  We stroked lots of them and even got to hold a chick. Some of us balanced him on our head! This week we are revisiting our predictions on our senses chart and adding on more things that we saw, heard, touched and smelt! Thank you to all our parent helpers who came with us to the farm.

Year 2 Science: Animals in Hands

To start our new topic, ‘Earth – our home’ we had an exciting, informative and inspiring visit from Mo at Animals in Hands. We shared our knowledge about the animals and their habitats and learned interesting things . . .

Rocky the Giant Cockroach can survive for two days without his head

Sandy the Namibian Gecko can grow his tail back if a predator bites it off.
Mr Prickles the Pygmy Hedgehog is a lot smaller than the hedgehogs in this country.
Midnight the Barn Owl can hear a mouse move underneath snow.
Milkshake the Milk Snake – Mo explained he was safe to handle
because he was red and black, not red and yellow (which can kill a fellow!)

Vanessa the Pink Toed Tarantula can live for 30 years,
but males can only live for around five years.

Trevor the Australian Cane Toad is Australia’s top predator.

Chilcote vs Wheelers Lane

On Friday 27th March Chilcote played their last league game against Wheelers Lane Primary School. Chilcote needed to win if they were to have any chance of winning the title.

The match started well for Chilcote and they scored a goal early in the game. The ball was bouncing around after a corner and Regan smashed the ball home from the edge of the area. Wheelers were stung into action and started to bombard the Chilcote goal. They had a number of throw ins and crosses put into the box, and after a poor clearance they put the ball into the back of the Chilcote net. After that, they scored from another throw in this time the player headed the ball into the corner of the net. Then, more trouble for Chilcote as the same player completed his hat-trick and scored with a lovely finish to make it 3v1 to Wheelers. Chilcote had been undone by some sloppy defending. After half time Chilcote played much better and kept things tight defensively. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find a way back into the match so the game ended 3v1. Well done to all of the boys for their efforts, not just in this match, but throughout the entire season. They have done Chilcote proud!!!
