Year 6 Treat – World
War I Soldier Visit!
|
Today,
Year 6 were lucky enough to meet a ‘real’ World War One Soldier. He was in full
khaki battle uniform, with equipment (including a rifle able to shoot 20 rounds
a minute).
The
soldier was full of fascinating knowledge of what it was like to be a ‘Tommy’
in the trenches. He described what the conditions were like, what equipment was
needed and how tough it was. In fact some of the soldiers were as young as 14
years old (they pretended they were older!).
It
sounded a tough existence in the trenches and not somewhere you would like to
be – even for a day. In fact, soldiers died fighting over the same land in
France and Belgium for nearly 4 years; most Tommies thought the war would be
over by the first Christmas!
We
now look forward to learning more about World War I during Remembrance
Commemorations next week (we even get a chance to dress up ourselves!).
Thank
you for reading.
