Year 1 History: World War 1 Commemorations.

Year one have really enjoyed learning about World War One. The children have been so eager to learn about this topic and have even continued finding out more at home, which has been wonderful to see.

We started our week by going back in time 100 years and found out what is was like to go to school in 1914! We had chalk boards to practise our handwriting on and lots of times tables to learn!

We also enjoyed finding out about the different types of clothes that were worn 100 years ago and the special jobs the children had during the war to help out.

Trench cake was sent out to the soldiers to remind them of home and we had a go at making and tasting our very own trench cake!

The children were also thinking about the soldiers in English whilst writing some fantastic acrostic poems! During our art lesson we created some wonderful poppy field scenes.

We ended the week by playing some playground games that children 100 years ago would have played. We played marbles, hopscotch, skipping rope games and sang "In and out the dusty blue bells". It was a lot of fun, well done year one for a super week!

Year 4 History: World War 1 Commemorations

This week Year 4 have been learning about World War One.  We found out the reason why the War started and created a timeline showing the key events that happened during the War.   Our main focus of the week was using the ipads to research how the High Street looked during WW1 and how it compares to our shopping centres.  To present our research, we created a leaflet.

Also, as part of the WW1 Commemorations week, we had a visitor who talked to us about how soldiers would dress, what they would eat and the conditions of the trenches.  He even dressed one of us up and we got to look at lots of interesting artefacts!

At the end of the week, we were able to sing our year group song ‘Daisy’ to some special visitors from ‘Oak Tree Court’ elderly home.

As part of our Remembrance work, we also designed and created our own sculptures in Art , which showed the different values linked to war, such as: love, peace, sacrifice and thankfulness.  These got displayed in St Peters Church for the public to visit.

Overall, Year 4 have enjoyed learning about WW1 and those that fought for us.

Year 6 Boys vs St Ambrose Barlow

On Thursday 13th November the year 6 boy’s football team played their third match of the season against St Ambrose Barlow. The match was played at Yardley Wood playing fields.

Chilcote started the match well and had the game’s first chance courtesy of Johnny but he just missed the target. Then, St Ambrose had a few good chances but Jack pulled off a couple of fantastic saves. The game was very even and both teams had chances. At half time it was 0 v 0. In the second half, Chilcote had a number of chances to get goal but fired straight at the St Ambrose goalkeeper. Jack pulled off another great save in the second half to keep the teams level. The game ended 0 v 0. This was a good result for Chilcote as they remain unbeaten and have still yet to concede a goal. They need a win in their final game to win the mini-league and get into the top division after Christmas. Well done boys!!!

Nursery World War 1 Commemorations

This week we have enjoyed dressing up in war time clothes and thinking about how they are different from what we wear today. We have been learning about poppies and how they help us to remember, and have used a range of materials to create our own.

Year 2 History: World War One artefacts

Today, Sandra from HSBC - she normally works with us on school banking - came in to show us some amazing World War One artefacts. Both her grandfathers fought in World War One and she explained how Princess Mary gave the soldiers in the trenches Christmas boxes. We got to see medals and photographs close up, including one photograph of Sandra's grandfather who survived the war, but died shortly afterwards because of the deadly gas used on the battlefield.

She was impressed by our knowledge of World War One and we all agreed how important it was for young people to remember the sacrifices made by others.

It was a privilege to hold these medals.

A genuine Princess Mary Christmas box. It was surprisingly heavy.

The soldiers' nicknames for these medals were 'Pip', 'Squeak' and 'Wilfred'!

YEAR 6 TRIP TO THE CINEMA!

This week, as part of a Film Festival, Year 6 were really lucky to visit the cinema (for free) and watch Mary Poppins! To get to the cinema we had to get a train to Birmingham Snow Hill Station and from there we had to walk to the cinema (in the rain!).

We decided to watch this specific film because in June, Year 6 will perform a musical based on the story of Mary Poppins.

The cinema trip was really really fun - everybody enjoyed it. In fact, the only bad part was all the walking! But apart from that, it was the best!

Thanks for reading,

Mia, Year 6.

Year 6 Hockey Tournament

On Wednesday 12th November 6 year 6 children (Anika, Seren, Connie, Kian, Dylan and Ali) represented Chilcote in a mixed hockey tournament at Hollywood Primary School. They played against 5 other schools; Hollywood, Bells Farm, Yardley Wood, Kings Norton and The Oaks. The matches were 4a-side using the ‘quicksticks’ format.

Chilcote started against Kings Heath and after going a goal down came back to equalise and draw the game 1 v 1, courtesy of a Connie goal. Then, they played Bells Farm and had a hard fought 0 v 0 draw, which was a fair result.  After that, they played Yardley Wood in another tight contest, but thanks to a great goal by Kian they won 1 v 0. Next, they played The Oaks and had a few chances to score. It took them a while but eventually Anika broke the deadlock and Chilcote went on to win the game 1 v 0. Finally, they played Hollywood school. The game was end to end and both teams had chances. Kian struck an awesome shot from just inside the Hollywood half which flew in and they took the lead. Unfortunately, just before the end Hollywood grabbed an equaliser after Chilcote had lost possession in their half. The game ended 1 v 1. Although they were unbeaten in the tournament, Chilcote finished second to Bells Farm on goals scored. A massive well done to all of the children involved in the tournament!!!

What a Choco-tastic Day in Year 4!

Year 4 had a choco-tastic time during our ‘Chocolate’ topic entry point day at Cadbury World where we learnt about how chocolate is made.  First we looked around the factory, learning about the history of Cadbury’s and how chocolate first came to Europe.  As we walked further into the factory we got to see some of the machinery that is used to produce and package chocolate bars.  As an added bonus, we were able to taste some melted chocolate with a choice of: white chocolate, popping candy and jelly babies as toppings.  At the end of the exhibition we were able to visit the 4D cinema, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.  To end our day we had a talk called ‘from bean to bar’ where we watched videos explaining how a cocoa bean is used to make chocolate.  To top off a fantastic day, we were given lots of free chocolate to take home and enjoy!

Video lesson: Maths: Mental/written methods of doubling

Year 6 Football Match

On Wednesday 5th November the Chilcote boys’ football team played against Severn Road School at Ninestiles. This was a tough game as both teams were unbeaten after their first matches.  The game started brightly for Chilcote who dominated the early possession. After a mad scramble in the Severn box, with the ball pin balling around the area, Chilcote grabbed the first goal of the game courtesy of Johnny. Chilcote continued to dominate and should have doubled their lead. Then, Severn began to come into the match and the game turned quite scrappy. Both teams tackled well and clearly wanted the result. After half time the match was still very even. Then, after a Severn corner Chilcote broke and Bradley fed Harry who managed to slip the ball past the goalkeeper. Chilcote then had a couple more chances to finish the game off, but didn’t take them. Overall this was a fantastic performance from the whole squad, who all played their part in the match. Well done boys let’s get another good result on Friday!!!

Year 6 Treat – World War I Soldier Visit!

Today, Year 6 were lucky enough to meet a ‘real’ World War One Soldier. He was in full khaki battle uniform, with equipment (including a rifle able to shoot 20 rounds a minute).
The soldier was full of fascinating knowledge of what it was like to be a ‘Tommy’ in the trenches. He described what the conditions were like, what equipment was needed and how tough it was. In fact some of the soldiers were as young as 14 years old (they pretended they were older!).

It sounded a tough existence in the trenches and not somewhere you would like to be – even for a day. In fact, soldiers died fighting over the same land in France and Belgium for nearly 4 years; most Tommies thought the war would be over by the first Christmas!

We now look forward to learning more about World War I during Remembrance Commemorations next week (we even get a chance to dress up ourselves!).

 Thank you for reading.

Year 4's Trip to St Peter's Church

Today, Year 4 visited St Peter’s Church in Hall Green for the exit point day of our ‘Living Together’ topic.  The children had designed and made some wonderful, imaginative sculptures linked to the theme of remembrance.  To give them inspiration, they looked at existing art work, such as the poppies currently being showcased at the Tower of London.  To create their sculptures, the children thought about the values linked to Remembrance Day such as: respect, hope, love, peace and sacrifice.  When the children arrived, they were given the opportunity to present their sculpture to Reverend Stephenson and other members of the church.  After, they were given a tour of the church and were shown the images in the stained glass windows.  It was a lovely end to our community topic and gave the children the opportunity to reflect, and pay respect to those that fought in the war.

Year 1's Day at Cannock Chase Toy Museum

The children in 1 Elm and 1 Fir thoroughly enjoyed their day at the Toy Museum. We have just started our new topic called 'The Magic Toymaker' and we are going to be learning lots about old and new toys and what materials were used to make old toys. Today the children learnt the names of some old toys such as a diabolo and a marionette puppet. They had great fun playing with the cup and ball, the yo-yos, the diabolo and the hopscotch! Before lunch the children compared old and new teddy bears and dolls and watched a fantastic puppet show! After lunch there was just enough time to make our very own peg dolls. Finally we pretended to be robots, soldiers and a jack in a box and learnt a super dance routine!

Magical Mayhem at Forest School!

There were all sorts of weird and wonderful happenings down at Forest School this week!
Heggarty, Hall Green’s resident witch, left the children a magical potion to find! It was very sparkly and smelt very strange. The children had a great time creating their own marvellous mixtures, based on treasures they found in the woods, and with the help of Heggarty’s Activation Potion, they were soon creating magic of their own! The children were transformed into fairies, zombies, vampires, bats and much more; they had a fabulous time and did some brilliant English work on instructions, adjectives, and drama at the same time.

The children have had a great time learning how to identify the different trees in our woods too, and have developed their own Makaton signs to help them remember which tree is which. We had a quiz to see who could identify the most leaves which the children loved!
