     Children in need
On the 18th November the country came together to raise money for Children in Need. All of Chilcote School dressed in yellow or spots and gave a pound to go towards the cause. It was a very exiting day. After a lot of hard work from the school councillors, we managed to raise a massive £480!

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Birmingham museum
On the 10th of November 2016 the School Council went on an informative trip to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to find out more about the history of Birmingham and to prepare for Remembrance Day. The first gallery was all about history and it was full of interesting facts and artifacts all about famous people from Birmingham. The second gallery was about famous paintings created in Birmingham. We also saw some works by Pablo Picasso and other abstract artists. We finished the day off by visiting the gift shop and traveled back to school by train from Snow Hill Station.

Pudsey's Visit to Year 1

In Year 1 Pudsey came to visit 1 Elm and 1 Fir to tell us all about the Children in Need charity and the various fundraising that is happening across the UK.

After the children learnt about raising money for Children in Need they had a catwalk showing off their spotty clothes, a ten minute class disco during golden time and a great time posing for photos with Pudsey. Some children did not want their picture taken but for those who did in 1 Elm please see the photos below.

Chilcote vs Moseley and Acocks Green

On Friday 11th November the Chilcote boys' football team played against Acocks Green and Moseley School. These were their final two games before the Christmas break.

Chilcote played against Acocks Green first and started the game well. They played good football and soon took the lead through Abdur-Rahman. Next, Damian scored to make it 2v0 at half time. After half time, Damian again scored after a lovely ball into the box from Cian. Then, Damian turned provider and found Cian in soace who finished smartly past the keeper. The game ended 4v0 to Chilcote.

Chilcote then plyed against Moseley. It was a really good game between two very evenly matched teams. Both teams played well defensively and struggled to get past their opponents. Chiclote had the best chance of the first half but missed a one on one opportunity and the defender cleared the ball off the line. Moseley had a couple of half chances in the second half but they came to nothing. The game ended 0v0.

Well done to all of the boys involved, as always they represented the school brilliantly!!!

Year 6 Mixed Basketball

On Tuesday 15th November two mixed teams from Chilcote played in a mixed basketball tournament at Kings Heath Boys School. The tournament took place indoors and eight teams entered. The schools were split into two groups and the winners of each group would make it to the final.

The yellow team from Chilcote played in group B. They started with a game against Yardley Wood B and drew the game 2v2 despite having lots of chances. In their second game they played against The Oaks and won 4v0. Finally, they played against Allens Croft and really found their finishing touch winning the game 18v0.

The Light blue Chilcote team played in group A. They came up against some really good schools. In their first game they played against Yardley Wood A and lost 6v0. Then, they played Hollywood and lost 12v1. Finally, they played against Bells Farm and lost 6v0.

The yellow team qualified for the final against Hollywood. Hollywood dominated the early stages but Chilcote took the lead and went into half time 2v0 up. Straight from the restart Hollywood equalised and then quickly took the lead. They were 6v2 up with a couple of minutes to go. Chilcote managed to get one basket back and then with virtually the last throw got an equaliser to take the game to extra time. Hollywood eventually won the game on a golden basket.

Well done to both teams on a fantastic effort and for representing the school so excellently!!!

Year 1's trip to the Cannock Chase Toy Museum

On the 15th November Year 1 showed wonderful behaviour representing Chilcote on a trip to the Cannock Chase Toy Museum.

The visit was part of Year 1's entry point day to the topic of The Magic Toy Maker with a focus on Toys from the past. Despite lots of traffic on the motorways, Year 1 sat beautifully for over an hour on the bus and arrived at 10.15 am. 1 Elm and 1 Fir had 4 workshops throughout the day and a nice rest break for a yummy packed lunch.

The students enjoyed their fun workshops and learnt about toys from the past through play and made a pegdoll in a craft session. The students had a dance workshop were they learnt to dance like a clockwork toy and learnt about puppets through a Punch and Judy show. The show was very funny and their was giggles from staff and students alike!

The children showed excellent manners and were complimented by the museum staff for their thoughtful, creative and interesting answers.

Chilcote Vs St Abrose Barlow/Oaks Primary School

On a chilly a Friday on the 11th November the Chilcote girls' football team played against the Oaks Primary School and St Abrose Barlow Primary School at the Yardely Wood playing fields.

The first game against the Oaks started with Chilcote on top and keeping possession of the ball, with some great defensive play. However, after a quick turn around from the Oaks the score at half time was a nail biting 1v0 to the Oaks.  Then, just before the end Amrita scored! Therefore alongside a great team effort the finishing score was a draw.

Well done girls a good effort!

Year 3's Airport Adventure!

Last Tuesday, all of year 3 went on an action-packed adventure to Birmingham Airport. The journey there involved lots of walking, two trains, four train stations and a monorail. Carry on reading to hear what the year 3 children had to say about the trip.

'On Tuesday we first walked to the train station and got on the fast train. Then we found our seats and sat down. When the train started moving quickly, it was all wobbly. After the train stopped we walked to the next train station, New Street. When we got on the train it started and we went to the airport. Next, we got off the big train and got on the exciting monorail which took us to Birmingham Airport. Then we excitedly walked to Flight School. When we got there we made our boarding passes, watched the planes and had lunch. After lunch we went back home feeling tired. We had a great day and all felt happy.'

Emelia, 3 Cedar.

‘We really want to go again!’
Jessica, 3 Beech.

'The monorail was like a rollercoaster.'
Aadil, 3 Cedar.

‘We saw some amazing aeroplanes.’
Imaan, 3 Beech.

'If you don't know what a monorail is, it's a small cabin with little seats and it felt like a rollercoaster!'

Lily, 3 Cedar.

Year 6 Visit London

On Friday 4th November 2016, Year 6 went on a trip to the Science Museum in London. The coach journey was long but we didn’t let it dampen our eagerness, we were all raring to explore as soon as we arrived.

We visited a new interactive gallery called Wonder Lab, which was a fantastic way to learn about different aspects of science. It was an amazing experience and fun was had by all (including the adults) experimenting with the different exhibits. We saw indoor lightning generated; experimented with different electric circuits; and slid down slides made of different materials in order to test which one caused the most friction. After we had had time to experiment, we went to watch an intriguing show all about electricity called ‘Live Wire’. During the show we learnt about circuits, how electricity is generated and how our homes are powered.

After a quick lunch, we went on a tour around London with our handy tour guide, Mr Cross, telling us all sorts of interesting facts about the landmarks we saw. Despite the rain, we had an enjoyable walk around the capital and very much appreciated the café in St James’ park that sold us lots of tasty hot chocolate!

We visited Horse Guards’ Parade after our time in the park, where we watched the changing of the Queen’s Guard – this was very exciting but we had to be very careful not to get in the way of the guards who were very serious.

Walking past 10 Downing Street, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben was an interesting way to end the day.

Year 6 MixedHockey Tournament

On Thursday 3rd November twelve children represented Chilcote in a mixed hockey tournament held at Hollywood Primary School. The children were split into three teams: yellows, light blues and navy blues. The teams consisted of two boys and two girls.

The tournament had a group stage to begin with. The ten schools in attendance were split into two groups of five. Each school would play each other once in the group stages and the winner of each group would get into the final.

Chilcote's light blue team were put in the same group as the navy blue team. They played four matches and drew all of their games. They were really unlucky in a couple of games that the ball just did not go into the goal for them.

Chilcote's navy blue team also drew all of their four matches despite dominating some of those games. They just could not score either. The game between the two Chilcote teams finished in a 0v0 draw.

Chilcote's yellow team had a little more luck in front of goal. They won their first match, drew the next two and then comfortably won their last game. The group was very tight and because other results went their way the yellows managed to finish top of their group and reach the final.

In the final the Chilcote yellow team played against Bells Farm School who had been unbeaten in the group. Chilcote played really well early in the match and took the lead through a great goal from Damian. A little while later, Damian intercepted a pass out and scored again. Bells Farm did manage to get a goal near the end of the match to set up a nail biting finish. Fortunately, Chilcote managed to hold on to the result and win the final 2v1!!!

Well done to all of the children who represented the school. A great performance and effort by all involved!!!

Computing in Year 3

In year 3 we have been very busy learning all about networks. We thought about how the computers, laptops, iPads, printers and the internet are connected within our school.

In groups, we took on different roles within our school network and shared information, requested webpages and printed documents. It would seem that there are some future computer scientists among us!

Now we are going to think about the networks that exist at Birmingham Airport as part of our Gateways to the World topic.
