Out and About Week in Year 4

As part of ‘Out and About Week’ year 4 have been doing lots of different activities.

Firstly, we went to Chinnbrook playground so that we could evaluate it, and make suggestions about how to improve it. After that, we designed our own playground which included lots of the improvements.

Secondly, 4 Lime went to the garden and learnt about all of the plants growing there. They also learnt about how to look after the different plants.

Thirdly, in English we read a story called ‘Ruby Nettleship and the Ice Lolly Adventure’ in the story area. This was about a girl who played at a playground that needed to be made better. Also, we wrote a letter to the Mayor asking them to improve Chinnbrook playground.

Fourthly, in Maths we played games in the outdoor area. We played human battleships (to help with our coordinates) and giant snakes and ladders (to help with our counting).

Next, we went on a litter pick to help keep the local community tidy. We picked up the litter on Scribers Lane.

Finally, visited the Macmillan coffee morning and ate lots of cakes. Also, we decorated our harvest box ready for it to be given away.

We have all really enjoyed ‘Out and About Week’ and learning outdoors!!!

Year 2 Science: UPCYCLING!

You’ve heard of recycling . . . well, today we rescued empty water bottles from the bin and transformed them into light bulbs that needed no electricity! This is called upcycling.

Inspired by Alfredo Moser, whose idea has transformed the lives of those in parts of the world where electricity is too expensive, we designed an experiment. This involved using the iPads to record our results by taking photographs of Lego people inside of cardboard-box houses when we added 100ml of water to the bottles each time. We then measured the light of each photograph in LUX by using Log-It.

Our Lego person goes into the house.

Using Log-It with the iPads to
see the difference in our photos.

Our data showed us a pattern,
so we could write a general statement.

Our general statement was that, ‘The more water we put in the bottle, the brighter the light in the house.’

If you can't afford electric light, just use water bottles!

Check out the photos we uploaded to The Cloud and see the amazing difference it can make to people’s lives when you take trash and turn it into something more valuable.

Can you work out what our change variable was?

Can you explain how this worked? Here's a clue.

You may already know but Earth Hour is happening on Saturday 29th March at 8:30pm. We are hoping that you will join many people and businesses around the UK by turning your lights off for an hour and take the opportunity to admire the stars which often can't be seen by light pollution (cloud permitting). This is part of a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative which is trying to raise awareness of the beauty of our Earth and the effect that man has on it. The pupils will be having a lesson on the morning of Friday the 28th, where no electrical device or lighting will be on.
