Chilcote school annual Christmas service at St Peter`s church
On Friday 20th December, we held our annual Christmas Service at St Peters Church.
The whole school travelled to St Peters by double decker bus or minibus as the weather forecast was for heavy rain . Everyone behaved beautifully, had excellent audience manners and the singing sounded fantastic. It was a very special morning.
Year 6 and staff acted out a retelling of the Christmas story and described how Christmas and Christianity is similar to other faiths and religions.Year 6 all received a Christingle which they held alight at the front of the church. The school staff band played a selection of Christmas carols and we were very pleased to welcome back Mrs Bramley, who is an important member of the band.
Well done everyone. All the staff are very proud of you.
Photos and videos were taken but due to technical issues, we cannot publish them just yet.
They will follow in the New Year.
With all best wishes to you all for a happy and restful holiday.

CALLING ALL PARENTS: GUEST SPEAKER AT CHILCOTE
Dear all,
As
you may or may not be aware, Year 6 recently completed a competition to
advertise the forthcoming visit of a special guest speaker, Neil Griffiths, to Chilcote Primary School. As always all the competition entries were outstanding. Look below to see a little taster of them - or hopefully you might catch the real life entries around the school.
Neil is an expert in English,
especially in the art of storytelling and reading aloud and he will be visiting Chilcote Primary School on the 15th
November 2017 to meet the children, conduct a staff meeting and hold a talk to parents (which everyone is invited to).
The event for the parents will begin at 2:35pm and conclude at
3:15pm. We would like as many people to attend as possible, as
this is an amazing event and doesn’t happen every day! At the end Neil will be selling books and, probably, signing them too! What else could you wish for?!
You
can find out more about Neil at: https://cornertolearn.co.uk/
Thanks for reading,
Josh, Year 6.

World Book Day 2016 - Visit of Birmingham's Young Poet Laureate, Serena Arthur!
A
very special guest visited Chilcote on March 2nd 2016, named
Serena Arthur, the young Poet Laureate of Birmingham. As part of her amazing role, Serena has been
travelling to fortunate schools across Birmingham to offer helpful
advice on how to perform and write poetry.
Despite only being seventeen years old,
amazingly, Serena has written over fifty inspiring poems! She has written creations such
as: Remember, Remember (the poem that won her the Poet Laureate competition), as well as work based on the themes of war, modernity and reality.
Chilcote pupils were very lucky to hear Serena's poems as part of a fantastic assembly; she read a couple of her favourite ones in front of the whole school (including a poem she wrote specifically for deaf children). Furthermore, she also visited Year 6 to recite a few more pieces that were aimed at more older children (such as a poem about Remembrance Day and the Holocaust).
All of Chilcote's children learnt lots of other useful information too, as the School Council asked Serena questions about
how she became such a spectacular poet. For example, we gleamed that Serena initially failed in her attempt to win the Poet Laureate competition; she had to demonstrate great resilience to come back the following year and win! This was truly an inspiring guest speaker!
Thank you for reading. We hope that all the children enjoyed the guest speaker as much as we did! Thank you to Serena (and her Dad) for visiting.

SCHOOL COUNCIL BLOG - VISIT OF LORD HUNT
Friday 26th
June
Lord Hunt's Visit
On June 26th Lord Hunt (who actually prefers to be called Philip) came to
visit the pupils of Chilcote Primary School, as part of our School Council arrangements and Chilcote's Health Week.
At 9:00am, in assembly, the Lord completed a Q&A session in
which the School Councillors had the opportunity to ask some difficult questions and hear a response from a politician! The answers were really impressive and the Lord even suggested who he'd prefer to win the upcoming Labour Leadership Contest: Andy Burnam is his choice! Interestingly, Lord Hunt also said that his most difficult time was when he has suggested reforming the House of Lords from appointed to elected peers.
As well as this, he told us all about the House of Lords and the House of Commons at Parliament. He spoke about what happens at both places, and the
differences between the Houses. Lord Hunt also told us that the Palace of Westminster is actually falling down!!
As a result of Lord Hunt visiting, we
learned lots of new things, such as: why he was interested in politics, and that he was a disappointed about the
recent general election result (Lord Hunt is a Labour peer).
This was an amazing time for everyone at the school, but especially the School Councillors, and all the children learned a lot.
To end his terrific
time at Chilcote the Lord had a tour of the school from the Year 6 Visitor Monitors.
Thank you to Lord Hunt for visiting and taking the time to answer our demanding questions!!

Year 5-Enterprise Day-A day in Politics-Thursday 21st May.
Year 5 enjoyed learning about politics
in our country, extending our knowledge of Britain`s current political parties
and finding out how the House of Commons operates.
We looked at how to debate effectively
and held our own debate on the issue of `Should we wear our own clothes to
school, rather than school uniform?` Some of our arguments were so persuasive
that many children had changed their viewpoint by the end of the debate!
We created our own political parties and designed logos and slogans to represent
them. We wrote manifestos based on issues that we had chosen and then held a
Hustings followed by an election in which we all voted for the party we felt would
be the most effective.
We all learned a lot
about politics and demonstrated many important skills such as developing
resilience and working well in a team.

THE SCHOOL COUNCIL INTERVIEWS HEAD TEACHER CANDIDATES!
On
24th February, the School Council, with the help of the School Governors, interviewed the candidates who
want to be Chilcote’s new Head Teacher! There were four candidates going for the
role and we asked them questions about becoming the new Head Teacher and why.
The
interviewees all answered very well and the School Governors were there too asking
us what we thought of the candidates and how they would be as a Head Teacher.
It was very nervous for the Councillors and the candidates, particularly as they are going for a very high role within
the school. Also, the Councillors asked their own questions of the candidates and
we received interesting responses from all of them.
They
were all interviewed on their own so they gave their own opinions and answers.
It was a very hard choice for us and the Governors!
Thank
you for reading,
Zain
(Chair) and Ali (Secretary).

'Old Joe' is the nickname for The Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower. |
At Yardley Wood, they are using an online system called 'Class Dojo' Your parents can see why you have earned rewards! |
![]() |
At Haslucks Green, they have tokens to get rewards. The blue one is a milk bottle top for when you do something to save energy. |
To answer their research question 'What rewards work?', they wanted to visit local schools. So, they quizzed the fantastic and welcoming children at Haslucks Green and Yardley Wood on the rewards they had at their school.
This Friday, they met top research author Professor Gary Thomas at the University of Birmingham who was very generous with his time, advice and his impressive selection of biscuits!
They'll be asking you for your opinions on what rewards work soon!

SCHOOL COUNCIL TRIP TO THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT!
On Tuesday 20th January, the School Council, competition winners, Mrs Wishart and Mr Canning met up by the school’s main entrance at 7:45am. The
atmosphere was electric! We were going to the Houses of Parliament for an
educational trip. The 15 children and 2 adults piled into the massive Johnson’s Coach with no idea of what the
day would bring!
The coach journey was incredibly long - just under 3 hours!
Some people read, slept, wrote, played games, or simply watched the view, and then
we were there!
As soon as we got off the coach, we looked around at the vast
capital city! Right in front of us stood The London Eye, Big Ben and The Houses
of Parliament! Those of us who had cameras went wild! Three of England’s main
landmarks, here, all in one place! And that was just the beginning…
After a short walk, we reached security! Our bags were
scanned, and then we excitedly walked through the metal detector ourselves! Mrs
Wishart bleeped! Consequently she had to stand in a T shape, with her arms out,
whilst the security man checked her with a smaller metal detector! Then, she
had to turn round and do the same again! For some reason, it seemed like it was
her SHOES that were setting the alarm off, and not her lovely jewels! Then they
gave us all these long lanyards to wear that proved that we’d been through
security.
Once through security, we went inside into Westminster Hall! It was GIGANTIC! The stained glass windows gleamed in the sunlight, casting
shadows into the room, which were tinted with all of the colours in the
rainbow!!! The massive hall dwarfed us,
and was full to the brim of camera men, reporters and schools! This was the 750th
anniversary of the first ever type of Parliament!
Then, we met our tour guide. He was a kind, jolly man called
Eric, who looked incredibly intelligent! As we walked round, we stopped at
nearly every room, whilst he told us lots of fun, fascinating facts! Here our
10 top facts for you to enjoy:
1.)
The Houses of Parliament is a palace – kings and queens lived there until a
fire when Henry VIII left and moved to a different palace!
2.)
It is 750 years to the day the first ever parliament sat in Westminster!
3.) 200 years ago was the battle of Waterloo and there is a giant painting on one of the walls of the battlefield. Another painting is of the Battle of Trafalgar (at this battle Lord Nelson died and his body was stored in a barrel of French Brandy before returning to England).
4.) Queen Victoria’s height was less than 5ft (that is why she always had a stool under her legs on the throne, so that her legs didn’t dangle!). The current Queen, Elizabeth II, has nearly reigned as long as Queen Victoria!
5.) The monarch is not allowed in the House of Commons so we can (and have) gone further than her! The Queen only comes to Parliament for 45 minutes a year, during the state opening of Parliament, and she is only allowed in the House of Lords.
6.) In the House of Lords and Commons you are not allowed to sit on the seats unless you are an MP or a Lord or Lady.
7.) In the House of Lords, every person has a time limit to speak! An alarm clock goes off at exactly 5 minutes!

After learning all of these facts, all we had time for was
lunch, the souvenir shop and the long trip back home!
Thanks for reading about our exciting trip to the Palace of
Westminster!
