Health Week in Year 1

Year 1 have had a super week this week. We have really enjoyed joining in with wake up shake up in the mornings and during the week we have taken part in a huge variety of activities.

On Monday, we had a brilliant trip to the allotments. We saw all sorts of plants and found out about how different foods we eat grow. There were beans, peas, apples, carrots and lots of flowers. We also spotted some of the insects and mini beasts we have been learning about in our 'Flowers and Insects' topic.

On Tuesday, we baked some delicious oat and honey biscuits. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Colin the Bee Keeper last week and we learnt all about where honey comes from. We enjoyed tasting it in our cooking!

Here is a copy of the recipe we used:

INGREDIENTS
Serves: 15
100 grams porridge oats
100 grams flour 100 grams caster sugar 100 grams butter 1 tablespoon honey

METHOD
1.Mix oats and flour.
2.Gently melt butter, sugar and syrup or honey in a pan. Combine well and then using 2 spoons form into balls evenly spaced on lined baking trays.
3.Dampen a spoon and press each ball lightly.
4.Bake for 15-20 mins til golden brown at 180. They will harden a little more when cooling so don't overcook.
5.When out of the oven remove to a cooling rack after about ten mins.

On Wednesday, Tom kindly brought his ambulance to Chilcote and we learnt about being a paramedic. We measured Millie's heart rate and talked about how to contact the emergency services. Tom also showed us inside the ambulance and put on the lights and sirens for us. Thank you Tom!

On Thursday morning, Mrs Adams ran a relaxation session for us. We learnt some ways to help our bodies relax for example gently stroking a feather on our faces. We really enjoyed chilling out! Thank you Mrs Adams! Year 1 also watched the staff rounders match and liked cheering on both teams.

On Friday, Year 1 took part in a fencing session. We learnt to use the foam sabres and using lunges to help us stretch further. After that we took part in the health week quiz. In teams Years 1 and 2 answered questions about sport, cooking and PSHE. Sapphire house won the Key Stage 1 quiz - well done Sapphire!

During the week Year 1 took part in a competition to see which class could complete the most laps of the Chilcote Kilometre over the week. The Key Stage 1 winners were 1 Elm! As well as this we have taken part in a range of mindfulness activities. Year 1 particularly enjoyed using Cosmic Kids Yoga.

Year 1 have worked very hard this week and have enjoyed Health Week. Well done everyone!

Year 1's local area walk

As part of our topic 'Our World' Year 1 have been learning about human and physical features we might see in our local area. We went for a walk around our school to take some pictures of different features of our area. The children were fantastic walkers and photographers - well done Year 1!

The children are brilliant at identifying human and physical features so you could quiz them when you're out and about!

Autumn Term in Year 1

Year 1 have had a brilliant Autumn Term. For the first half term we transitioned between Reception and Year 1 with choosing activities as well as our focused work. In Autumn 2 we have been working very hard doing our work and our lessons as a whole class.

Our topic for Autumn 1 was 'Our World'. We enjoyed a trip around our local area and learnt all about trees and birds we might find in 'Our World'.

We painted trees, made clay birds and at home we created our very own bird projects which were fabulous!

Making our clay birds.

Here are some of our bird projects:

Year 1 learnt about Dementia UK when we raised money for them by wearing blue. Mrs Butler came to talk to us about the charity and who they help.

As part of learning about 'Our World' we learnt about our rights and we took part in UNICEF's World's Largest Lesson, finding out about where our food comes from.

We also painted some self-portraits in the style of Chuck Close.

In Autumn 2, our topic was 'Toys'. We have enjoyed finding out about toys from the past, especially when we went on our trip to Cannock Chase Toy Museum.

Here is some of our writing about our trip to the toy museum:

Autumn's recount

We asked our families about the toys they liked to play with and to end our topic we designed and made our own puppets.

Well done for all your hard work this term Year 1! Have a super holiday.

Year 2 at Peckwood

This week, Year 2 have been to their very first school residential. We went to the Peckwood centre, just outside Alvechurch for 2 days. Despite the forecast, the weather was mostly dry and we spent lots of time outside playing on the equipment, exploring the forest and using many of the skills we have learnt at Forest School this year.

We enjoyed playing together on the climbing frames and in the play area, especially using the fireman's pole!

We made a leprechaun land out of things we found around the forest. While we were in the forest, we did a treasure hunt and had to find items including something yellow, an elf's hat and a dragon's scale!

In the evening, we had a night walk with our torches. Mr Cross cooked us a delicious roast dinner and then we had hot chocolate, marshmallows and hot dogs around the campfire.

We used our typing skills to write about some of the things we enjoyed the most.

Chinese New Year in Reception

On Monday 30th January, we celebrated Chinese New Year in Reception.
We learned how families prepare for and celebrate Chinese New Year and why each year is named after an animal. This year is the year of the rooster.
We all learned actions and moves for a dragon dance and took turns to parade in a Chinese dragon
(provided by Mrs Merchant Smith - thank you) and learned a song with actions.
We also enjoyed tasting some chinese food and writing chinese characters to represent numbers and words.
Lilian in Year 1 lent us some lovely artefacts to look at and discuss too, so we have learned a lot of information about Chinese New Year and we all had a great day!
