Woodlands Residential

On Wednesday 7th May year 5 embarked on their residential trip to Woodlands. After quickly settling into their dormitory the children went on their first activity. The children did a range of activities whilst they were there. They did: High rope climbing, assault course, canoeing, zip wire (over the lake) and archery. On the first evening the children ate a chip shop dinner, before taking a trip to the sportshall. Here they took part in a variety of team races which tested their sporting skills in a number of different sporting areas. After this, the children had hot chocolate before going to bed. The next day saw the children having a dorm inspection before they went on their second activity. After a quick lunch they did their third activity. Then, the children had dinner and took part in problem solving activities. Unfortunately, due to the weather the children were not able to have a campfire, but they were able to watch a talent show put on by the children themselves. Friday morning saw the children packing (strangely not everything would fit back in the suitcase). Next, the children played Frisbee golf and had a look around the animal sanctuary.

The children behaved impeccably during the trip and really did the school proud. Every child tried their best and accomplished many personal goals whilst at Woodlands!!!

Swimming Gala

On Monday 19th May some year 5 and 6 children represented Chilcote at their first ever swimming gala. Chilcote competed against 3 other schools: Hollywood, Bells Farm and Kings Norton. The children competed in front crawl, breast stroke, back stroke and freestyle individual races. Also, they competed in a boys relay and a girls relay. Out of a total of 18 races (including 2 relays) Chilcote managed to achieve 8 first places, 6 second places, 3 third places and only 1 fourth place. Amazingly, Chilcote won the event and received the trophy!!! It was a fantastic competition, which the children really enjoyed! Well done to all of the swimmers from Chilcote: Kishan, Elliott, Dylan, Giacomo, Holly, Anika, Rachel, Sophie.

Maypole Tournament

On Thursday 15th May the year 6 boy’s football team took part in the annual Maypole tournament. There were 4 teams present and Chilcote were the defending champions. They played 3 games in the group stages and drew 1 and lost 2, however they still qualified for the semi-finals. They played against one of the teams they had lost to. They drew the game and then neither team could find a way through during extra time, which meant dreaded penalties. Both teams went all the way through their teams (with only one person missing the target) before eventually Chilcote won the penalty shoot-out and made it into the final.

In the final Chilcote started the match asleep and unfortunately fell behind to a bullet header from a corner. They then woke up and began to play. However, the other team were good opponents and held out. Chilcote couldn’t find a goal so finished the tournament as runners up! Well done to all of the boys who have represented the school this year they have done us proud!!!

Chilcote vs Kings Heath

On Wednesday 14th May the year 6 football team played their last league game of the season. They played against Kings Heath, who were the early season favourites for the league. Chilcote took an early lead through a great run and finish from Elliott. Kings Heath then woke up and began to put pressure on the Chilcote goal. Unfortunately, this pressure told and Kings Heath managed to score two quick-fire goals before half time to make it 2v1 to them at the break. After half time Kings Heath continued to press, but it was Chilcote who scored next, with another great run and shot by Elliott, which Ayden finished off into the net. Then, heartbreak for Chilcote as a long range effort from the Kings Heath captain flew into the bottom corner meaning the match ended 3 v 2 to Kings Heath. Chilcote are now waiting on other results to determine where they will finish in the league.

Tag Rugby

On Wednesday 30th of April year 6 took part in a baverstock tag rugby tournament. This tournament was mixed which means both girls and boys. We won all our games against different schools, and the most common score was 5-1. These games were challenging due to different  children’s  strengths and weaknesses. This made the game more fun! We got to the final and after a long hard battle we finally won the cup. Which meant we were through to the all Birmingham final. This was a great experience for us all.

Year 6's visit to The Library of Birmingham

On Monday 19th May, Year 6 took the train to Birmingham to visit the new library. We were able to explore many of the floors including: the children's section, where we spent some time reading; the beautiful gardens on floor 3; the viewing platforms; and the Shakespeare collection on the top floor. We were extremely fortunate with the fantastic weather and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It has inspired many of us to go back in the future and borrow some of their amazing books. If you haven't been yourself, we would definitely recommend a visit! Enjoy looking at some of our photographs and let us know what you think...

Year 5: Trip to Sarehole Mill and the River Cole

On Tuesday, as part of our rivers topic, Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Sarehole Mill.  Although the weather didn’t look promising in the morning, it turned out to be a brilliant day!  The children had the opportunity to investigate the Mill to see how the water from the river powered it and helped produce flour.  All were excited to find out how this place played a significant part in the writing of Lord of the Rings!  Also, later in the day, Jan worked with the classes to discuss the importance of water and the different parts of the river.  At some point in the day, all of the children were able to get their hands dirty by climbing into the river and using nets to identify insects that lived there.

Year 4: Golf tournament runners-up

After school today, a team of golfers from year 4 headed off to Tidbury Green Golf Course to participate in the Baverstock Sports Partnership Golf Tournament.

The children had to work as a team against the clock to amass as many points as possible across 10 different golf activities. When the final result was announced, Chilcote just missed out on bringing home another trophy. Nevertheless, the children were handed runners-up medals and certificates. Most importantly, they’d all enjoyed their first golfing experience, working brilliantly as a team once again.

Wild Flowers with Colin

Year 3 had a brilliant afternoon on Friday, at Scribers Lane Allotments with Colin and Anne, sowing wild flower seeds around their new car park area. To mark the 100 year Anniversary of the start of the First World War, we also sowed an area of red poppies, for remembrance. Colin and Anne have done a lot of work with Year 3 this Year; they helped us with our work for the Harvest Assembly back in Autumn, and also came to school to tell us about bee keeping and let us taste their honey from the Scriber’s Lane bees. It was great to help them out, learn about plants growing, see what is growing at the allotment, and see the bees busy working away collecting nectar and pollen to make this year’s honey! We are looking forward to going back to see our wild flower meadow and poppies in July.

Nursery's little visitors

This week, we have started our new Growing topic.  We really enjoyed looking at photos of ourselves as babies, and talking about how we've changed.  We thought about what we could do when we were a baby, and what we can do now we have grown.  On Wednesday we had a lovely visit from a Mummy and baby, and asked lots of questions to find out all about them.  We have been looking after the dollies in Nursery ever since!

Next week: we will be continuing to think about how we have grown.  We will be comparing our heights by using height charts, as well as using ICT to explore and annotate a photo of our face.  We will also be solving number problems by using lots of baby items!

Happy Easter

Wow!!! What a busy time in Reception.
Over the last couple of weeks the children have been very busy learning about Under the Sea creatures. The children told us that they were particularly keen to learn about jellyfish and sea turtles, therefore we spent a day learning some super facts and the children enjoyed sharing their new knowledge with each other and making some Under the Sea related clay models.
Over the last few days we have been celebrating Easter by watching two fantastic assemblies, making Easter cards and baskets, making chocolate crispie cakes and parading our super Easter bonnets. The children also had a special visit from the Easter bunny who was kind enough to leave some chocolatey treats around the playground for the children to find.
Now it is time for us all to have a restful two weeks and recharge those batteries ready for the summer term.  Happy Easter!!!

Dhol drummers

On Friday 4th April, we were visited by a fantastic group of  4 young Dhol drummers who played in front of the whole school. They came from Cherry Orchard Primary School in Handsworth and were dressed in colourful costumes from India.

The drummers performed different rhythms led by Harjit Singh their teacher, who is in charge of Percussion and World Music at Birmingham Music Service. Their music was very loud and exciting and everyone had a fantastic time.

Bradley in Year 5 joined in playing with them and kept up very well despite not being as experienced as them. Other children from Years 3,4 and 5 had a chance to play a rap rhythm on the drums too.

We hope to begin a dhol drumming group at Chilcote soon.

Year 4 Topic: Cadbury World trip

On Thursday 3rd April year 4 went on a fabulous trip to Cadbury World, as in topic we will be learning all about chocolate. First we excitedly boarded the coach, which raced towards the factory in Bournville. When we arrived we all walked sensibly (even though we were all anxious to get inside the purple building). Adventurously, year 4 clambered up the rigid stairs, while more visitors ran inside.

After that we all had a quick snack that was so delicious all though everyone had something different. Then we all sped carefully, inside the busy, colossal building; we walked to the mind blowing Aztec Jungle exhibition. Then we journeyed to Europe where we learned about how Hernan Cortez brought cocoa to Europe. As we continued on our quest we learned the story of John, and his sons George and Richard Cadbury. Next we discovered where cocoa originates. It travels from Africa (Ghana) by boat  to a factory in Britain where the process begins. Then we went to see how the Dairy Milk bar was made.

We were all excited as we arrived at the popular Cadabra ride. Next, year 4 designed their own chocolate using different toppings. Mr Setchell asked politely but firmly for triple jelly babies and he got them!
By this time we were starving, luckily it was lunch time!

After lunch Curtis, a chocolatier, spoke to us in more detail about the process of chocolate making and dressed Sadie as a factory worker. Finally we sleepily trudged back to the coach for our journey back to school.
Year 4 had a phenomenal trip and we are all looking forward to our topic on chocolate.

Nursery butterflies

We have been waiting for a sunny day to release our butterflies out into the school garden. Tuesday was the day! We carefully transported the butterfly house outside and stood in a circle around it. As we lifted the lid, the butterflies started to fly out and we waved goodbye to them.  Some of the butterflies needed a bit of encouragement, so we carefully placed them on a stick and let them have a little rest before watching them too fly away!  We have loved looking after our caterpillars and watching them change into butterflies.  We have learnt so much about growth and changes ove time.

Next week: we will be learning about the Easter story and why Christians celebrate this festival.  We will be going on an egg hunt, as well as sharing out Easter bonnets with our friends and family.  Don't forget to finish making your bonnet at home!

Reception at the Sea Life Centre!

Last Thursday the children in Reception were lucky enough to go on a visit to the Sea Life Centre. It was a great way to start our Under the Sea topic and allowed the children to get up close to a variety of different sea creatures such as a giant turtle, sting rays, sea horses and sharks! The children have loved looking back at the photos in class and talking about what they saw. The children have created some fantastic art work following the trip and have enjoyed making their own story books about the sea creatures.

Just a reminder that next week is our Easter Bonnet parade. If you have any questions please come and speak to a member of the Reception Team.

Nursery's Inspire Workshop

Many thanks to Nursery parents for joining us for our mathematics Inspire workshop last week. It was great to explore the book 'Nigel's Numberless World' together, and find out that numbers are very helpful!  We celebrated Nigel's birthday and put the right number of candles on the cakes, as well as sharing out the eggs in the kitchen.  We also made Nigel's magic watch and printed with 'Numicon'.  All children have been given copies of the workshop notes.

Year 4: Hockey champions

This evening, Chilcote’s Year 4 team emerged victorious in a hockey tournament held at Hollywood School.

Here are the statistics:

P 6     W 5     D 1     L 0

Goals for: 8     Goals against: 1

Well done to Emily, Jessica, Martin, Olivia, Sam and Thomas who all played the same game time and all gave everything. The secret of their success? All six independently practised their skills every break and lunch in the week leading up to the tournament.

They aimed high; they won the trophy.

Year 4 ICT: Human robots

We had great fun this week programming our very own human robots. First, we designed our own programming language. For example, instead of ‘Right’, we wrote RT and for ‘Forward’, we wrote ‘FW’. This saved time when writing our programs.

We then wrote our programs, debugging (fixing problems) and thinking of ways to simplify them as we went by using repetition in our sequences. Some of us even moved on to use conditional commands such as IF, THEN and UNTIL.

By the end of the lesson, we had completed various coding missions including 'Create a dance routine' and 'Fetch objects and move them'.

Why not try getting your own human robot to dance with this piece of code we wrote:

LT leg UP 20cm
LT leg DOWN
ROTATE HEAD 90 CW
RPT 4
RT leg UP 20cm
RT leg DOWN
ROTATE HEAD 90 CCW
RPT 4
THEN
LT arm UP UNTIL STOP
LT arm DOWN
RPT 4
RT arm UP UNTIL STOP
RT arm DOWN
ROTATE 90 CCW
TILT HEAD 10 RT
TILT HEAD 10 LT
RPT 8

RPT UNTIL MUSIC STOPS
