World Book Day in Year 3 Beech

Today for World Book Day we studied Edward Lear's Poem - The Owl and the Pussy-cat. The children had great fun learning all the words to the poem and acting it out in groups. We began by looking at techniques we could use to read out a poem. These included using expression, good eye contact, variation of our voices and being confident. The children then added in musical instruments, this gave their performances a lovely lift.

After lunch, we were lucky enough to be able to perform our poem to Year 4 Lime. They were a great audience! Year 3 really did their selves proud and remembered all their lines, actions, instruments and stage directions!
Year 4 then performed their poem Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen. This was amazing and made us all laugh lots.

Finally, we ended the day by attending an assembly ran by poet Jess Green. Jess specialises in performance poetry and this definitely showed as she treated us to a live performance of her poem 'I come from...'. Children in Year 5 and 6 had written lovely poems around this subject too and shared these with the whole school. They were incredible and we were so proud of them!

Overall, we have had a fantastic day in Year 3 Beech studying the poem and learning all about how to perform our poetry. We discussed our love of reading and all showed off our amazing costumes. Plus we all got to laugh at Mr Bannister's Oompa Loompa costume with his bright orange face!
